Q: I’m not sure if Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will be right for me. Can I try a class before signing-up?

Q: I do not have any prior martial arts experience do you offer classes for beginners?
A: Our classes are open to all skill levels, beginner through advanced. We do offer our Fundamentals classes which help students to develop their foundational techniques in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Q: I don’t own a Gi. Do I need to buy one to try out the class?
A: No. We will lend you one of our Gis for your free trial class.

Q: What should I expect my first class?
A: The class typically begins with a warm-up which includes Jiu Jitsu specific exercises and movement drills. Next, the instructor(s) will show several techniques for the class. The instructor typically follows a specific topic of the week. During your first class, you will be paired with a partner to help you in learning how to do the warm-up and learn the different techniques. The last part of each class consists of “rolling”, which is the grappling equivalent to sparring. You DO NOT have to roll your very first day, but you are welcome to. The instructor will pair you up with someone who is more experienced so that they can work with you and guide you through the rolling process.

Q: What if I’m not exactly in the best physical shape or an older individual wanting to train Jiu Jitsu? When I’m in class, will I have training partners who will be willing to work with me?
A: Yes. Our students range all ages and are men and women of all different shapes, sizes, and levels. You will see that finding someone to train with who is comparable in shape, size, and age is not hard at all. We also have many higher ranked students who will be able to work with you in a way where you can be challenged, but still go at a pace that you will feel comfortable with.

Q: I’m not sure if I will be able to keep up with the pace of the class. Do I need to be in shape before I start taking classes?
A: No. As you participate in class, you will develop your cardio and endurance through the regular training. Weight loss, muscle development, coordination and overall better physical fitness are just some of the rewards that come from training Jiu Jitsu. Also, you are welcomed to pace yourself throughout the class. We always want you to try your hardest, but we understand that, if you reach your limit, you must sit out at certain times.

Q: I’m just looking to get in shape/learn self-defense/learn something new and I don’t think I want to compete. Will my training be different/will I not receive the same attention because I do not intend on being a competitor?
A: Absolutely not. We understand that not everyone plans to be a Jiu Jitsu competitor. You will still receive the same training and attention. In fact, a lot of our curriculum focuses on the self-defense aspect of Jiu Jitsu. Whether your goal is to lose weight, learn to defend yourself, or compete, the techniques and skills you will learn will always be detailed and relevant.

Q: What is the belt system for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
A: For adults there are 5 belts; White, Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black. For children the belt system can vary by age depending on the school, but generally the ranks are; White, Gray, Yellow, Orange, and Green. For both adults and children each rank has up to 4 stripes (degrees) before a promotion to the next belt level.

Q: What is the basic etiquette while in class?
A: There are general rules and etiquette which will be explained prior to your trial class.
